Typical apple crisp is made with lots of butter and sugar. Not this one.
✅ No butter
✅ Sweetened with orange juice and a little brown sugar.
✅ Topped with whole-grain granola.
The top recommended apples are Granny Smith, Golden Delicious, and Honeycrisp. These apples are crisp and will hold up well when baked. I go for whatever apples I have on-hand. Mostly often, I have gala apples in the fridge.
Both are sweet treats starring apples. Crisps have an oat and streusel topping. Overall, this makes the dish lighter. Apple cobbler uses a dough similar to biscuits, which can be found as a base and topping.
At this point, I consider crisp topping and streusel to be pretty much the same thing. Start with sugar, flour, and oats. Then, work in some cold butter. SO simple, yet it adds dimension, texture, and flavor. It has stood the test of time for a reason! For this recipe, I used granola, cinnamon, and brown sugar to create a similar topping.
With just an apple, a few simple ingredients, and 10 minutes- you can be enjoying this gluten free apple crisp. Dessert can be healthy AND satisfyingly-sweet!
