Last week, I ate a cheeseburger for the first time in nearly a year. It came from a food truck and it was free- which is often the best kind of food! Grilling season has begun, but I often opt for a healthier turkey burger and sometimes, hot dogs just look too good to pass up. (I know…I know…do not ever tell me what is inside. I’ll happily continue to live in my ignorance is bliss state.) But sometimes, a juicy, all-beef cheeseburger is just the ticket!
Over the years, I have attended many BBQs, but I have never been one to pile on onions, tomatoes, and lettuce. First, I prefer chopped iceberg lettuce on a burger, but restaurants always use romaine with a giant stem in the center. And now I enjoy tomatoes on a turkey sub, but I haven’t quite gotten to the place where I feel the tomato enhances my burger. As most people will agree, melted cheese and ketchup are always necessary.
These turkey burgers have become my favorite way to enjoy a healthier, but still satisfying and delicious, burger. The grated onion gives these burgers so much moisture and flavor! This recipe also makes delicious meatballs and, though I’ve never tried it, should work well as a meatloaf too. A few family members are gluten-free, but the hash brown idea mostly came from available leftovers I had on hand…er, uh…I mean ingenuity. I basically combined the burger with the French fries and no one will notice the missing bun. Plus, less carbs!
Yes, ground turkey is a great source of lean protein! Compared to beef, lean-ground turkey will have less calories, fat, and saturated fat. With less fat, it's important to keep the burgers from becoming too dry. In this recipe I used grated onion to keep the meat juicy.
