Peanut Butter Cereal Treats

It doesn't get more simple or classic than these peanut butter cereal treats. Soft marshmallow squares with creamy peanut butter and finished with a peanut butter and chocolate drizzle- YUM!

When a recipe has been around for more than 80 years- it MUST be delicious! Rice Krispies treats or marshmallow squares are simple, fun, and loved by everyone!

Seriously...have you ever met someone who didn't like them?!? That would be very suspicious...

Marshmallow cereal treats were likely one of the first desserts I was able to make on my own. Simply melt, stir, and pour. Then, stir some more, spread, and wait. Still made with only 3 classic ingredients, plus I added peanut butter for more flavor and protein.

Now, my mom LOVES rice Krispies treats! And I've found with my family, the simplest desserts are often the best! I've spent hours creating multi-tiered masterpieces- only to hear many more comments when simply served chocolate chip cookies and vanilla ice cream. Sometimes an easy classic is the way to go. Plus, Rice Krispies treats are already gluten free!

Ingredients in Peanut Butter Cereal Treats

  • Brown Rice Cereal
  • Peanut Butter
  • Marshmallows
  • Butter
  • Optional: Chocolate Chips

Steps to Make Peanut Butter Cereal Treats

  1. First, grease and/or line a 9x13 baking dish. For a thicker treat, use an 8x8 or 9x9 pan.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, add the brown rice cereal. Set aside.
  3. In a medium saucepan, heat the butter and peanut butter over medium-low heat. Then, add the marshmallows and whisk until everything is melted together.
  4. Pour the marshmallow mixture over the cereal. Then, quickly and carefully stir until the cereal is well coated. Spread the coated cereal into the baking dish. Next, use hands or a measuring cup to evenly press the cereal. The more you press, the harder the cereal bars will become. Allow bars to set for at least one hour.
  • Note: you can spray your hands or the measuring cup with nonstick cooking spray.

What is the secret to making softer marshmallow treats?

First, melt the marshmallows slowly- I recommend using the stovetop and not the microwave. Also, don't press the treats too firmly in the pan. The more you press, the more compacted and harder they will become.

Are Rice Krispies gluten free?

Yes, Kellogg's Rice Krispies are gluten free. Today, there are also a number of similar cereals that can be used- but check to make sure they are gluten free. The cereal itself would most likely be gluten free; however, it could be processed in a facility with other products containing gluten. I used an organic brown rice cereal.

How long have Rice Krispies treats been around?

Rice Krispies treats were first developed in a Kellogg's test kitchen in 1939. They were part of a marketing effort to promote a toasted rice cereal invented by W.K. Kellogg in 1927.
